How does pregnancy affect vision?

Women experience countless physical changes during pregnancy, such as body sensitivity, water retention, nausea, but few women know how pregnancy affects their vision. The hormonal and physical changes that expectant mothers experience can lead to dry eyes, blurred vision, and other serious changes. This can also be the first sign of a more serious condition such as gestational diabetes.

This is why we offer expectant mothers three vision conditions to watch for during their pregnancy.

BLURRED VISION

Mild changes in vision are common for pregnant women. If you notice that your vision is constantly changing or periodically fluctuating, you are likely experiencing refractive issues caused by fluid retention. For most women, these changes are temporary and disappear after childbirth. If they persist after the little one arrives, a visit to the ophthalmologist is necessary. Keep in mind that we recommend young mothers wait between six and nine months after giving birth before visiting us for changes to their glasses prescription. The goal is to ensure their eyes have fully adjusted.

DRY EYE

The hormonal fluctuations that occur during pregnancy can reduce the natural production of tears, leading to dry eyes in some women. This manifests as chronic stinging or a sensation of grit in the eyes. After childbirth, these symptoms often disappear, but in some cases, they may persist and require treatment.

DIABETES AND GESTATIONAL DIABETES

Women with diabetes or gestational diabetes are at a higher risk of developing serious eye diseases, which often worsen during pregnancy and can lead to permanent damage to the blood vessels in the eye.

Pregnant women should be especially cautious about severe blurriness or fluctuating vision, double vision, flashes of light, and partial vision loss.

Women with diabetes or gestational diabetes should visit their eye doctor once per trimester to monitor the condition of the blood vessels in the eye and reduce the risk of diabetic retinopathy, a diabetes-induced retinal damage, which can lead to permanent blindness.

Although many vision changes during pregnancy are temporary and resolve after childbirth, it is important for expectant mothers to be informed and attentive. Dry eyes, blurry vision, and diabetes-related risks should not be ignored. Regular check-ups with an ophthalmologist and monitoring of visual health during pregnancy can prevent serious complications and ensure the health of both mother and child. Pregnancy is a time of change, but with proper care and information, expectant mothers can enjoy this significant period without compromising their vision.
