The most common thyroid diseases
The most common diseases in women are thyroid gland diseases.The most widespread thyroid disease is its enlargement, or so-called goiter. Goiter can occur with normal thyroid function, as well as with increased or decreased function. The most common disease with increased function is called Thyrotoxicosis or Graves' disease. It is characterized by swelling in the neck area due to an enlarged thyroid gland, weight loss despite a healthy appetite, rapid heart rate, sweating, high blood pressure, and protruding eyes. Decreased thyroid function is called Hypothyroidism and can be congenital (appearing in newborns) or acquired in older children. This disease manifests as delayed growth and short stature, dry skin, constipation, coarse voice, and delays in neuro-psychological development. The incidence of congenital hypothyroidism is 1:3500 newborns, which is similar to the rate across Europe. Acquired hypothyroidism is most commonly due to the autoimmune disease known as Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, which also features goiter and the symptoms listed above.
