A comprehensive eye examination involves an evaluation of vision and ocular structures to detect and diagnose eye diseases early. It is a key part of eye health care and is recommended for people of all ages. The examination is conducted by an ophthalmologist and generally includes the following steps:

• Determination of refraction, measurement of visual acuity, and prescribing of optical correction – These tests make it possible to determine how clearly the patient sees at a distance and up close. The presence of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia (age-related vision reduction) is determined. Based on these tests, the most suitable optical correction is identified, tailored to the individual needs of the patient, their lifestyle, and visual habits.
• Measurement of intraocular pressure (tonometry)Intraocular pressure is a key indicator of the risk of glaucoma (“the silent thief of sight”), a disease that often has no symptoms in its early stages. Timely detection of elevated pressure allows for early treatment and prevention of permanent vision loss.
• Examination of the anterior eye segment – cornea, anterior chamber, iris, and lensThis examination assesses the condition of the external and anterior structures of the eye. It provides information on the presence of inflammation, infections, traumatic changes, dry eye, as well as initial or advanced lens opacities (cataract).
• Examination of the fundus and retina (after pupil dilation)This stage enables a detailed examination of the retina, vitreous body, optic nerve, and blood vessels in the eye. The test is extremely important for diagnosing diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, vascular changes, and other conditions that may threaten vision.

Regular preventive eye examinations make it possible to detect serious eye diseases at an early stage, when treatment is most effective. Specialists recommend a preventive examination at least once a year for adults and at least twice during childhood – before starting school and in the early school years.

Dr. Kristian Stefanov is a resident specialist in ophthalmology at the Specialized Eye Clinic “PENTAGRAM” with interests in cataract surgery, diagnostics, and treatment of anterior and posterior eye segment diseases.

During his studies, he worked as a caregiver at UMHATSM “Pirogov” and UMHAT “Alexandrovska,” but chose SOBAL “PENTAGRAM” for his specialization in ophthalmology. He is a member of the Bulgarian Medical Association and the Bulgarian Ophthalmological Society.

His clinical and research interests focus on cataract surgery, diagnostics, and treatment of anterior and posterior eye segment diseases.
